about

A member of the Spanish National Orchestra and a former pupil of Hermann Baumann, Javier is a virtuosic performer on both the natural horn and on the modern instrument. This recording, made in 2004, showcases his talents on the natural horn and reveals a player with strong lyrical gifts and a singing tone. Some listeners will never reconcile themselves to the inherent inequalities in tone between open and stopped notes on the hand horn though in the heyday of the natural instrument the different shades which it could produce were surely seen as positive qualities and in the hands of a performer like Javier, it is not difficult to see why.
The music is all by Louis-François Dauprat, the professor of horn at the Paris Conservatoire from 1816 until 1842, and the author of a monumental two- volume treatise on horn playing. His work as a composer is little-known to modern audiences and while it would be wrong to proclaim him a great master, this CD reveals him to be a competent writer, the equal of many of his contemporaries. In particular I enjoyed his Horn Sonata, Op.2, a three movement work influenced not a little, I suspect, by Beethoven's Sonata and a piece which deserves a niche of its own in the repertoire. His "Tableau musical", Op.5, a series of short scenes for horn and piano is perhaps more of a period piece than the Sonata, but this too has charming, well-crafted moments and the third of 3 "Mélodies", Op.25 also sticks in the memory.
This is scored for two horns, one crooked in F, the other in E flat, with piano accompaniment, and is reminiscent of an operatic duet with recitative-like passages and arias for the two horns separately and then together. Javier is joined by Juan Pavia on the other horn part and the piece concludes with some splendid fireworks! Fans of superb hand horn playing should not miss this CD.
